I listened to Archspire’s debut album several years ago and immediately tuned out, judging the band to be just another generic, if technically proficient, technical death metal band. How joyous it is to see that on Relentless Mutation, Archspire is more technically accomplished than ever while also newly capable of writing memorable and compelling songs full of outstanding riffs, interesting leads, and varied (if maniacal) drumming! Perhaps most notable of all, however, is the absence of the sterility that so often plagues technical and brutal death metal albums, replaced here with an atmosphere and production that is much more “alive”, which is quite refreshing. Archspire rose above the majority of its contemporaries with this album, a true declaration of intent nearly unmatched both in its over-the-top execution as well as its accessibility.
